Metformin

Dear Friends,

Few months back my diabetologist has put me on Metformin 500 mg Sr - two times a day. I am experiencing weight loss. Of course I have reduced carb intake and doing Trade mill. Does Metformin help in reducing weight ? Does it reduce muscle mass ?

Thanks in advance,

Anil

I haven't heard anything about it redusing muscle mass. I seem to rember that in the first year of use it does help a lot of people lose some weight. But the effect stops at about a year or so. Now in a verry few people it causes weight gain and I happen to be one of those who gain weight on it! I sure wish I could take it but as I
said it makes me gain weight at the rate of about 10lbs a month!

Useless. See your doc, get some real treatment! Cinnamon? Please.

<<this weight has to come off I have a friend that loss weight like crazy about 40 pounds but her sugar are out of control in the 300's with insulin>

She also desperately needs to see her doctor. Obviously whatever she's doing with insulin is not cutting it. She lost weight because her body didn't have enough insulin on board to metabolize the food she ate, and she just peed out all those unused calories. She's probably very sick. Please urge her to see her doc!!

And you go, too, okay? Let us know how you're doing.

Update

Well, i finally got tested and my blood sugar lever came out to be 83 mg/dl so i definitely dont have diabetes. I probably have hypoglycemia but wont bother getting tested because its too difficult to diagnose. My condition is not so bad as long as i avoid eating all foods that have any sugar or sweetener in them and to eat only fruits that are lightly sweet and in small doses. I just discovered sour tamarind satisfies my sweet tooth so now i eat my meals with tamarind dip (homemade).

Now, i suspected i had gallstones a while back because i got a sudden stabbing pain in the right upper side of my back that lasted for a 1/2 hour 2 years ago. Ever since then i have severe indigestion and get internal heating with sweet, spicy, and fatty foods. I got an ultrasound test about 3 months ago but nothing showed up. Then someone told me i cant rely on the tests because hers came out negative even though she still had gallstones, and got rid of them by doing a gallbladder flush. I recently did the Dr Schultz gallbladder flush and now i feel worse than before. Whenever i lay down the aching pain in my side, right around where the gallbladder is, increases and can only sleep 2 hours at a time. I thought the raw oils would flush it out but now the problem has grown bigger. I must avoid all oils now and eat only fish meats with my meals of rice and vegetables.

As for my blood sager level, my guess is that it goes up and down easily. There are a few things that could help such as GTF chromium and herb pharm's sugar metabolism compound. Has anybody tried these? I eat holy basil with almost every meal which feels good.

Did you also have an A1c test? It's possible to have a WNL fasting glucose but an elevated A1c (which shows the glucose average for the 2-3 preceding months). IOW, it's possible for your glucose to be very elevated 1-2 hours after eating, even tho normal while fasting.

<<I probably have hypoglycemia>>

Six small meals a day and avoiding refined sugar and HFCS and most white flour will help, whether you're hypo- or hyper-.

< Now, i suspected i had gallstones a while back because i got a sudden stabbing pain in the right upper side of my back that lasted for a 1/2 hour 2 years ago>

This could also have been from passing a kidney stone.

Severe GERD (gastro-esophageal reflux disease) can also cause this kind of pain on occasion.

<<Ever since then i have severe indigestion and get internal heating with sweet, spicy, and fatty foods>>

Have you been evaluated for GERD and for esophageal erosion? Both can cause that kind of discomfort. It's possible to have severe GERD and no actual heartburn (I know, because that's what happened to me).

<<I recently did the Dr Schultz gallbladder flush and now i feel worse than before. Ah, this gets worse when you lie down. Hmmm, GERD is a real possibility. It's a miserable, horrible disorder, and it can do a lot of damage to your esophagus if left untreated, but it's easily managed with prescription or OTC proton pump inhibitor drugs and/or OTC antacids like Pepcid Complete. The easiest thing to do is get treated for GERD and see if your symptoms improve.

Sleep with the foot of the bed elevated. Don't eat for two hours before bed. Avoid spicy food, carbonated drinks, rich fatty foods (steak, chocolate, you name it). Lose weight if you need to. But do speak to your doc about a prescription or OTC GERD med, and ask him if it's okay to do a trial of an OTC anti-acid med.

Most herbal remedies are useless, IMO. I suppose most of them won't hurt you, but I think they're mostly a way of lining the pockets of those who market them. If something besides metformin, hypoglycemic oral drugs, insulin and Byetta or Symlin really helped T2 diabetics, don't you think that news would be shouted from every rooftop in the world?

They won't be shouting it from every rooftop in the world if Big Pharma continually pays someone to research it and say it isn't any good. They may work for some and not others.

I read an article a few months ago where some big pharmaceutical company paid for a study on something that has been used for years (I think it was for pain, but can't remember now) and it was now saying it was just like a sugar pill. Well, they can't exactly say that it was that way for animals who don't have the reasoning for whether they are taking the real thing or a sugar pill and it worked for them all these years. I can't remember which pharmaceutical company had paid for the study, but it was even named in the article.
