complications from lows?

There are no long term complications from insulin shock, except of course for accidental death! It's just very hard to live your life if you're constantly battling lows-- they make you physically weak, sweaty, unable to think straight, it could be dangerous to drive (especially if the low is busy going even lower). Plus battling lows can often mean constant correcting with more food, which can cause weight gain or make you take more insulin, driving you low again, making you eat again, etc-- that merry-go-round is no place to live. It's better to work really hard to find a balance.

Long term complications of highs mostly affect people who have had diabetes for 10+ years. Many type 2s are diabetic for ages before actual diagnosis, so although for instance the doc may have said, "Whoa, Nelly!" 2 years ago, it's possible for that patient to have been glucose intolerant for many years previously, during which time his diabetic complications have been galloping along. Diabetes is the leading cause of adult-onset blindness, stroke, kidney failure and limb amputation.
