Yes, thse will up the numbers.  I did have a chuckle over how you 'found' a  way to communicate. LOL........where there's a will there's a way..
Good luck with your recovery.

I know but it was all I was offered, and since they are giving me huge doses
of IV Solumedrol I think it is more due to the steroids than anything
else. I like all of those, but can usually keep my blood glucose numbers
within reason by counting the carbs, and by morning I was down to 134 before
breakfast. The doctors haven't said anything about it, the only folks that
are regulating my carbs is dietary at this point.

Thanks Linda, I know you are trying to help, I just don't want you to think
I am being rude or anything. My steroids are making me punchy at the moment
and extremely hungry. I have actually been doing really good on eating
today here in the hospital, eating nutritiously for the most part. Can't
have diet pop so I have been working on my bottle of Sierra Mist Cranberry
Blast pop since going out to my truck to get it just before 12 noon today.
I haven't really drank that much either.

I know that when ever you have a virius that your BG's are elevated and I am sure all the meds they have you on are not going to help that and so for now you BG's are going to be elevated.

Hi All~

If anyone is wondering where I am, I was admitted to United Hospital last
night after having 3 or 4 episodes since midnight of getting dizzy, my brain
swimming, vision changes, and falling on my butt or walking into a wall then
falling down. Each time I did this as soon as I got my butt off the floor
I did my BG and it was 249 just before I drove myself to the hospital... I
know bad patient. But I seem to be okay except for my headache when I am
sitting down, these episodes don't seem to happen when I am just sitting.
But when they do happen my headache gets much worse. Tylenol and Ibuprofen
aren't even touching it at this point.

They think I have the flu again. I was started on Tamiflu again too. And
they up'd my steroids again, so my BGs are really high again. For
curiosity I did my BG a little bit ago and it is still 280. And all I have
had since getting up here last night (after 8p last night) is 4 pieces of PB
toast, apple juice, orange juice, and water.. and that was only because I
missed dinner all together sitting in the ER.

I am illegally using the hospital computer so this will be short. It is for
STAFF ONLY, but we all know how well I listen!!

Hope everyone is doing well, I'll update when I know more.
Love Always,
Anne

And so will soda pop!

It might be best, Anne, if you stopped eating the sugary things, especially while you are being hospitalized for high-blood sugar.

I thoughts go out to you, Anne, and I hope you get better soon.

But come on, soda pop? No one in this group should be drinking soda pop.

FYI: I've just come from the endocrinologist, who showed me how to use the glucagon pen should my boyfriend ever need it. His A1c was 8.4 which is too high for long-term health. It really makes me mad that he won't stop putting cookies and candy in his mouth.

Meter/strip temperature

Good morning,
After getting the exact same reading three mornings in a row (117, high for me recently), I figured something was off. Read the strip label, and it says "store between 59-86 degrees". That's gotta be it, my house is set at 60, and when I tried the reading this am, is was at 52. Can't get ahold pf Bayer yet. and DR.s office says turn up the heat. They don't know anything else. Turning up the heat is not an option, turning it on at all was a tough financial decision.
If I wait 'til we're at 60, will the strips still be accurate, or has the cold destroyed them? I'll ask the pharmacist later, but thought I'd look for some real life experience.

Thanks,

Margo

Margo, try "wearing" the meter for an hour or so tucked under your
shirt. That will warm it up.

Hi Marguerite~

I know if my bag has been out in the truck for any length of time (here in
the Minnesota Tundra) and then I try to do my BG the machine will say
something about error, and it is just because they are too cold. But once
both the machine and the strips are warmer they work perfectly fine. So I
don't think that your house being cold should have that big of an impact on
the test strips... if you kept them in the refrigerator or freezer for long
periods yes, but not just because your house is cold. But what do I know?
I could be wrong.
I am off to the doctors now to have my leg wounds looked at and then do a
bunch of errands, I will check back with y'all later!

It may also be a function of the temperature of the meter and its batteries. Have you tried warming both the strips and the meter to within the recommended temperature range(s)?

60 degrees in your house? Wow, you are one tough cookie. That's darned cold.

But anyway, if I were you, I'd try storing them on top of the fridge. It's always warm up there. Only thing is, can you measure the temp up there somehow, to make sure it's not too warm? You could also store them next to your computer tower, if you keep your computer on 24/7, as I do. It's warm there-- one of my cat's fave spots.

Hi Margo,
I leave strips in my office and sometimes it gets cold in there. We turn the heat down at night and also during the day when we are away from the house. When I'm out shopping, lots of time I leave my purse in the car for several hours, strips are in my purse. I've never had any problems.

It will be interested to hear what Bayer tells you.

Just looked at a vial of One Touch Ultra strips and the temperature range on these is 30-86 degrees.

hugs
Eunice

Ruby,

I did the same thing when I found out that I was pre-diabetic and I used to
be a paramedic, so don't beat yourself up about not taking it as seriously
as we should have. Because I feel like I should have known better but just
wasn't thinking straight at the time. I think I was diagnosed as
prediabetic like 2+ years ago.

Have you gotten your glucometer yet? Otherwise if you go to a diabetic
educator I am sure that they would just give you one. Maybe even your
primary clinic would have one for you. They get them as free samples just
for that purpose. I would call your doctor and ask. Or if you have a
diabetes fair going on around where you live they are a good source for a
lot of free stuff, to learn about what other things are out there for folks
like us, you will learn a lot about the meds and what the do, what things to
look out for when you are eating and just about anything else you might want
to know about diabetes. We went last year and came away with a lot of
stuff. If you are in desperate need of a glucometer I would happily send
you one of the many I got for free with some test strips to get you started.
. I seem to have a lot of stuff. They want to give, I am willing to take...
No problem!!

I am serious, just write to me at my email off group, and I'll send you one.
My email is: aemr911@gmail.com

I don't think you can eat the same amounts as you used to eat safely even
with insulin, but those would be good questions to pose to your primary care
doctor, a diabetic nurse educator, or an endocrinologist all of which I
suggest you get. They are all very helpful with the new diagnosis.
I have only seen the endocrinologist once since being diagnosed but have to
call in my BG numbers every week and he looks them over and then adjusts my
NPH insulin (while on steroids) to keep my numbers in a good range. Just
tonight he added another 15u of NPH at bedtime on top of the 45u I already
take every morning with my regular meds.

I hope this was helpful to you, if you have any other questions we will do
our best to answer them as best we can or point you in the right direction
to get the answers you need.

Good Luck!
Anne

Subject: [diabetes] New member meal question

When I first saw on the lab results that I was pre-diabetic, I didn't
realize what would happen next. I continued to eat large portions of food at
lunch and dinner, only to find myself having scary heart and head symptoms.
By eating smaller portions, I feel much better.

I am still waiting for the insurance company to mail me the glucose meter.
In the meantime, I don't know how to feed myself enough. I am now eating
only half amount of the food I used to eat. I take a whole afternoon eating
a small salad and entire night eating a tiny small meal. I am hungry but
afraid to eat more. My stomach aches because of the long stretch of feeding.
I also do not have much energy, out of breath a lot.

For someone who was just diagnosed to have diabetes or prediabetes, how to
test the right amount of food I can eat w/o getting into high glucose? How
do I know if I actually need insulin to eat the
same amount of food I used to eat?

Thanks,

Ruby

7.0 sounds like your A1C level, not a blood glucose number that you would
test for, but I could be confused.
I am type 2, and my blood glucose numbers range between 90 to 200 on a good
day without steroids, but I seem to be living on steroids at the moment.
But when I am not on steroids I have gotten down to 43 and was sicker than a
dog. Because I live with such high blood sugars I have a tendency to start
feeling hypo anywhere between 70 to 120. So I am allowed to treat for hypo
at that level.
The lowest I have ever been was 34, and that was when I was a paramedic like
15 years ago after working my 12 hour shift. I got D50 and food and I was
fine pretty fast after that.
For the moment, I have been continuously on steroids since the beginning of
December but on them more than off of them since last summer and especially
September to today. I was officially diagnosed on November 13th, 2009. So
I have been on meds since then. And am on NPH insulin once daily when on
steroids.

I'm also 100+ lbs overweight, and Hep C, I know that I can't go over on the
protein because of hardening of the liver but I also know that there is a
lot of fat hanging off my poor liver right now. Can anyone give me some
sorts of hints on what to eat. My son (whose body is his temple-*rolling
eyes* but does look really good) prescribed 6 small meals for me per day...
I've only just started.

Have you been back to your doctors lately, that sounds like you need to
start.
Is your son a doctor or something that he thinks he can prescribe meals to
you? I would suggest seeing a diabetic educator, or dietition because they
would be better at telling you what you can and can't eat.
My brother sounds kind of like your son, is why I am wondering. He won't
take meds, but he will smoke (makes no sense to me) but he is all into
holistic stuff and complementary therapies. He is a massage therapist as is
his wife.

almonds for meal 1, a chocolate protein drink with 1 teaspoon of natural
peanut butter, raw oatmeal and 8 oz of skim milk and 1 scoop of protien
powder for meal 2, for meal 3 - 1/2 c. cottage cheese with 1/4 cup fat free
berry yogurt mixed with 1/4 cup plain yogurt, for meal 4 - 1/2 fistful brown
rice combined with 1/2 fistfull beans and 1 palm sized portion chicken
breat. Meal 5 is the same as meal 2 or 3. Each meal is 2 1/2 hours apart.

Because of wounds on my legs I drink a lot of protein shakes too, because I
don't get enough protein in my diet regularly. I need the protein to heal,
and being on steroids is really reeking havoc with my wounds so I am trying
to get as much protein in as I can. Bad thing is that I have a horrible
sweet tooth especially on steroids. I am currently sitting in the hospital
with the flu and a flare up of my asthma. I am not sure what else is going
on with me other than that I feel like crap!!

Hope you get stuff figured out quick!! Good Luck!!
Love Always,
Anne

es everyone think?

Thanks for any input.

Hi Anne,

To clarify - you are using the US mg/dl system, the rest of the world use a different measure - mmol/l.  To convert, multiply mg/dl figure by 18.
In this case:
4.0 mmol/l = 72 mg/dl
7.0 mmol/l = 126 mg/dl

Hey All,
Sorry to make this a mass message, but didn't want to have to type this a
bunch of times, so this is how it had to be for the moment...

I am actually home now, but have to go pay my lot rent which is late because
I was hospitalized the day it was due so now I have to come up with $854
instead of the $427 I have. Going to do some begging with my hospital
discharge papers to prove that I was in the hospital to see what the park
owner says.. I did go get all of Terry's unemployment money from the bank in
case they say "too bad so sad". But then we will be broke again until next
Wednesday when we would get his last unemployment check and my truck payment
won't get paid on time either.... Frustration.

Then I have to head over to the outlaws house to see how Montanna and Terry
are doing, to see if I have to take Terry over to the U of M hospital
because of his sickness... We don't have insurance for Terry and Montanna so
when Terry gets sick, he has to go to the ER because of his heart stuff.
And his parents are real good about taking him to the doctor especially the
ER. Thankfully the Children's Clinic will see Montanna without any problems
even without insurance.

I wish there was a way to put them on my insurance but since mine is
completely through SS and Medicare it isn't an option. Terry did start the
paperwork and interview to apply for SSI (supplemental security income... I
think that's what the letters mean). He had it as a child because of his
heart and hearing, and that way I am pretty sure that both of them would
then be covered by medicare or whatever or eligible for MA for medical and
dental... At least I hope.

Blood sugars have been really good today, had my last dose of IV steroids
last night just before my IV blew, so that is helping the whole blood sugar
numbers but I do have to continue my taper down still with oral steroids. I
think my body is so used to the steroids now that when I don't have them for
a few hours I drop to hypo numbers. I kind of felt bad about stopping at
Starbucks on my way home for a treat, but then did my blood sugar and it was
80, so that made me feel better because hopefully the hot chocolate helped
bring it up to normal. I start feeling hypo at up to 120 at times, the
diabetic nurse educator says it is because I have lived with such high blood
sugars these last couple months that this is considered okay, and to treat
like I would if it was 70 or lower.

Well better get going to the park office, then to check on the family at the
outlaws house. Then I am hoping to come home and take a real nap in my own
bed, with my own pillows and such.

Chat soon!
Anne

Hi All,

Well as soon as they decide that I don't have benadryl in my system anymore,
they are going to allow me to go home. It is nasty weather out there with
the roads being horrid, and I get to drive myself home in it.. fun fun! Oh
and I have to go walk around the nurse's station to prove that I won't pass
out. Okay, I can do that.

The doctor thinks the dizziness and such were from a viral infection, I am
on Tamiflu again so I am being treated for H1N1 again. I should get off the
computer now, since I am NOT supposed to be on it anyway. I'll write more
when I get home.

Anne

Your best bet is to contact whatever drug company produces the meds he takes. They often have programs for those in need.

Help, I've been on Byetta for a month now. I have and am living with every side affect listed and then some. Heart burn, nausea, diahreah, abdominal cramps but no throwing up yet.. but (Ain't there always a but) my BG levels have never been so good (some extra lows but not that low-- high sixties) and the real winner.. I've lost 11 pounds in a month without really trying..
I know you will think its because of the side affects but i'm still eating soooooo what do you think.. live with the the bad till I've lost a lot of weight or give it up??
Thanks
Ron

I would talk to your doctor and see if he thinks you should keep sticking it out. Or maybe he can give you something to relieve the side effects. I was successful with it for a while but then had the nausea and vomiting with it and had to stop. Sounds like it is working for you but I dont know if I could put up with the side effects. Until you decide something make sure to get plenty of fluids. Diarrhea can really dehydrate you.

Are you still on the 5mcg dose? Usually at one month they up you to the 10 mcg dose *if* you're tolerating the lower dose okay, but it sure sounds as though you're not tolerating it at all, just gritting your teeth and bearing it, which IMO is a hard way to live.

I took Byetta for a couple of months last year and finally had to quit it. I got so sick and tired of being sick all the time, especially in the evening, shivering, wrapped up in a blanket, nauseous to the max but unable to throw up, feeling like I had the flu.

There's a wonderful friendly yahoo Byetta support group here

Join up, those folks can help you decide what to do.
