does anyone have a product that they found that is decent enough for a treat, I find it can take away those nasty cravings for a candy bar with less fat and calories but have not tried to find the best version....
any suggestions or should I stay away ?

There is a hot chocolate mix that has around 5 carbs per serving. I found it at Walmart.
Kroger has a low carb yogurt - 4 carbs. I get this in vanilla, add some SF chocolate syrup and a dollop of whipped cream
Add some SF chocolate syrup to a tablespoon of peanut butter - stir well.

Hope these help.

I take 2 spoonfulls of cocoa powder, 2 packets of Splenda, 3 spoonfulls of powered coffee creamer, 1 spoonfull of vinilla extract, and add boiling water. Yummy, and low glycemic.

Hi Eric,

You could use a chocolate flavour protein powder - it will keep you feeling like you have had a snack (OK mixed with water).  The one I use has only 1.97g of carbs per serving.  Found the label here:
http://www.hollandandbarrett.com/vf/labels/002692HB.pdf

Don't know if sold by others in US as it is made there, maybe walmart do some?

With every good wish,

If you are really concerned... I'd call in the morning. They have doctors
on-call for this exact reason. I was actually told to call over Xmas if I
had concerns because my new doctor was the one on-call. So he was willing
to talk to me on Christmas if need be.

Good Luck!! Are you on steroids at all? That can raise your blood sugars
too. Just before I was diagnosed in November I was on steroids and my BG
levels without any diabetes meds were 599+ for quite a few days no matter
what I ate. So there are other things that can affect your BG levels that
you won't necessarily think of.

You'll make it through! We are all here to support you!!

You need to pinpoint what food item is causing that. Perhaps the Lantus dosage is low. Consult endo.

Hi Rachel,

I would call your doctor right away, and maybe that is where you need to be.
In the hospital so that they can get your sugars under control in a more
controlled setting.

With my leg wounds I had wound vacs too, for about 7 months or so mostly on
my left leg, but for a little while on my right I think too. It stunk but
my legs healed with them so much faster, then they ever did without their
use, it really does help to get the tissue to grow in.

I am guessing that your body is working so hard to get your wounds to heal
that it is taxing the rest of your body and that is why your sugars are so
out of control... But that is just a guess.

I hope you get this figured out soon so you can get on with healing your
whole self and further damage isn't done by the high sugars. I am
hopefully on my last day of 40mg Prednisone twice a day, then will try to
start tapering down again tomorrow... I HOPE!!

Good Luck, and tell us what the doctor says. I'll be thinking of you and
keeping you in my prayers!
Anne

Hi,
Thanks so much for all your answers regarding getting fasting blood sugar
tests. I've made an appt for 7 am in the morning and will take my
breakfast with me to eat right afterwards. Yes, they are also doing an A1C test.

If you are diabetic, I always thought that whenever they do the fasting
blood work they also do A1C. At least that is what my clinic does. And
they are doing a bunch of blood tests not just my fasting glucose... they
want you to be fasting for lots of tests.

Just my 2 cents!

I always read the orders before I leave the docs office to make sure he didn't forget anything. The lab only runs what the doctor remembers to write down.

I thought that too. Today I went in for bloodwork(fasting) and the nurse made a coment it was for cholestrol recheck..I ask about the A1C and she said that would be in March which is 5 months since my first ck. when I was diag. I guess I thought it was every 3 months..sure would have been nice to know if it came down any but it hasnt been a full three months yet. I would have prefered if they did all fasting test at one time :) jean

Jean,
unless they're doing other tests at the same time, there's no need to
fast for an A1C.

fasting not necessary for A1c

Once someone is in decent control, the A1c is usually only done twice a year. It certainly can be done more often, but if there's no need, the doc wouldn't order it.

No fasting necessary for the A1c-- it can be from a blood draw done at any time of day, regardless of when you ate. If you need a fasting glucose done at the same time, then of course you'd need to fast for 8-12 hours before the draw. But the A1c alone is not dependent on fasting.

I am not using insulin like you are, but I thought I would say that when my
blood glucose gets too low or even approaches too low, I get really sick so
I wake up. It sounds bad, but so far my body has found a way to tell me
each time I was too low, and it was actually when I wasn't even using
insulin at the time. My only insulin at this point is 45u NPH every
morning while on steroids... which at this point might be forever the way I
am going!

Just my 2 cents!

BK~
I wasn't really looking for a diagnosis, just a suggestion and the article
that Iain sent sounded a lot like me. Plus I did say I would be talking to
my doctor about it. It could also have to do with the fact that I probably
have a sinus infection, will be getting a CT early next week for it because
the pain is acting like it is a real live sinus infection again .. (I get
them fairly often, and it is big deal to treat me because it requires IV
antibiotics and PICC lines due to my allergies). So they want to make sure
it is a huge infection before they start with the big guns and put me
through the whole procedure again!

Jean~
I am on steroids because of my respiratory infection that put me into
respiratory distress/arrest on December 13th. The infection or whatever it
is has actually been getting better since I was started on this long course
of steroids, and when I tried to go down last week, my allergies were set
off again so I was cranked back up to 40mg twice daily again. I will try to
go down again on Tuesday I think. It will be interesting. I think that
all the added stress on my body of everything that has been going on both
physically and in my life this last year is now all catching up with me. My
hubby is very stressed so everyone here is feeling that and it is finally
really soaking into me as a person because he is SO STRESSED, it is driving
us all crazy at the moment.

I have had a horrible headache the last few days so I am guessing that my
sinuses are playing a major role in my headache, dizziness, and such and I
just wasn't thinking that way when I asked the question originally the other
night. Thanks for all the input though, it made me think!!

Hope everyone is having a good night, I am hoping to go to bed soon!!
